Cosmetic Treatments

Botox

Botox® is a relatively new procedure using Botulinum Toxin which was developed to treat the visual signs of aging by reducing or removing wrinkles. The procedure is considered a safe, effective way of treating aging skin. Common areas for Botox® injections include: horizontal forehead furrows, vertical lines between the eyebrows and "crow's feet" around the eyes. Botox® has proven to be the best non-surgical form of facial rejuvenation, and is capable of producing phenomenal improvements in your appearance.

Reasons for Considering a Botox Treatment:

  • Excessive facial wrinkles.
  • Large wrinkles or furrows in your forehead.
  • Small wrinkles or "crow's feet" around your eyes.
  • A vertical "frown line" between your eyebrows.

General Procedure

The procedure works by altering the facial muscles beneath the skin that are related to wrinkles. A cream with local anesthetic will be placed on your skin prior to treatment, and ice will be immediately applied upon completion of the Botox® treatment. Typically a small amount (1-2 cc's) of Botox® is injected into the area of the wrinkle. Botox® works by blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles, thereby relaxing them. The result is the underlying facial muscles relax and the skin begins to smooth out. The effects of a Botox® treatment will last approximately three to six months after which the patient may choose to repeat the procedure.

Recovery Process

Patients generally return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, however following the post-procedure guidelines will dramatically reduce the length and intensity of the recovery period. Patients should avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours after the injections. It is also advisable to avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours.

Restylane

Restylane® is an FDA approved cosmetic dermal filler that replaces lost volume and restores youthful contours to the skin, to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is long-lasting (about 6 months), and is the world's most used, most studied dermal filler. Restylane® has been used in over 70 countries and in more than 1.4 million treatments in the U.S.

If you're considering treatment for your facial wrinkles and folds, we invite you to learn important facts about Restylane®, including how it provides structural support and lift to nasolabial folds. In this section, you'll learn where Restylane® can be used and see examples of how either treatment can help you reach your goal of a more youthful appearance. The procedure is non-surgical, and its effects are virtually instantaneous.

Restylane® is made of hyaluronic acid. In the human body, natural hyaluronic acid provides volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane has been modified slightly to last longer than the body's hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is produced by a biotechnical process.

Restylane is hydrophilic or "water loving." The hydrophilic nature of these hyaluronic acid molecules and their three dimensional structure allows them to bind many times their own weight in water. As hyaluronic acid begins to degrade, each molecule binds to more water which helps to maintain its volume for about six months.

Restylane contains no animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reactions. Restylane contain trace amounts of gram-positive bacterial proteins and are contraindicated for patients with a history of allergies to such material. No allergy testing is required before use.

Restylane® requires no pre-testing. Before being treated with Restylane you should take a few precautions. Prior to treatment, avoid using aspirin, NSAID's (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), St. John's wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, discuss this with your doctor, who may prescribe a medication to minimize recurrence.

Restylane® is injected directly into the skin in small amounts by an ultrafine needle. As with all injections, some patients may experience discomfort. To increase your comfort, your doctor will assess your need for pain management and determine what technique is right for you.

Restylane® is approved for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

After your treatment with Restylane®, you may have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness. This will normally last less than seven days.

Restylane® is different from Botox® Cosmetic

Restylane® is a cosmetic dermal fillers injected into the skin to smooth facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). In contrast, Botox® Cosmetic is a drug that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the muscles that cause frown lines between your eyebrows.
